Tis the Season!

Well hello, hello!

December has been here for a few days now and I've been soaking up the beginnings of the holiday season. With December, besides Christmas, always comes the end of NaNoWriMo, which I am happy to say I won this year! Yep, yep, yep, Counterblow hit 50,000 words! Well, actually, over that many. I've still got a little to add, but I'm just gunna say it's in the "editing" stage at this point. That means that we all can look forward to reading the second installment of Lawrence's adventures in 2013! (I don't have any actual date yet, but I'm thinking February...) After that, I have a whole repertoire of stories to choose from for my next endeavor. I'm thinking of tackling either Evil Queen, or finally finishing that rewrite of The Journal... Do you know what I'm talking about when I toss around those titles? Of course not. Maybe I'll throw in some descriptions of those... but not now. Now is the time of Counterblow.

Also, it is the time where everyone is thinking about what gifts to give on the 25th, and I feel it is time for me to do a little product endorsement. Why not give the gift of reading this holiday with a copy of Zone-E or Happenstance? Just click the title to be taken straight to the CreateSpace e-store! (NOTE- Yes these are available on Amazon as well, but the links to CreateSpace are more handy...)

And, hey, if you like the books and want some nifty merchandise like a t-shirt or stickers, I've set up a store on Zazzle! Link ensuing: http://www.zazzle.com/samanthataylormerch

That's all for now. Enjoy the holidays, play some music, put up some decorations, and enjoy this except from Counterblow! (Be warned, I have not edited this. Also be warned that reading this is sort of a spoiler if you have not read the first book):

The alien sound of an engine roared up the road to Miner's Hollow. As it's headlights hit the first buildings of the small town, the strange machine was revealed to be a fancy, black car. The residents peeped out of the pulled back corners of curtains as they watched the contraption with wide eyes.

Cars weren't often seen in these parts. Such technology was only found in the big cities – well the only two there were: Spokepsie and Rimarosa. Most towns were content with staying behind in the times, but suddenly Miner's Hollow was thrust into a strange combination of the two.

The engine went silent. The lack of noise seemed eerie in the abandoned streets. The headlights on the car died, and all the onlookers let out the smallest sigh of dissapointment. Those, who had only moments before stood glossy-eyed as they took in the strange spectacle, turned away uninterested. The town went back to their nighttime business.

The sound of one of the car's doors opening was largely ignored, as was the fact that a tall, dark figure emerged from the vehicle. The shape of the stranger showed that he must be a man. A beam of light emerged from him. What would have at first seemed like a strange phenomenon soon proved itself to be a flashlight as the figure maneuvered it around in one hand so he could shine it's light on a scrap of paper. Once whatever was written was taken in, the man began to move towards the buildings, shining the light from his flashlight towards each one in turn as if in search for something in particular. He finally stopped before a house that seemed somehow different than all the others. It wasn't any shabbier than the others. It seemed to be as much of a dump as the rest of the buildings in fact. It was one story and made out of wood so old that parts of it were rotting away by the roof. The front door was a dark color that the man couldn't place until he touched it. He soon found that it was caked in some kind of dirt. The man shivered in disgust. But, this was the place he was looking for. He would have to suck up his pride. His hand disappeared into his dark coat for a moment and re-emerged with a white handkerchief. After wrapping his right hand in the white cloth, he used it to knock on the door.

It took a moment, but soon footsteps could be heard coming up behind the door. Finally, a slot that the man hadn't noticed before was pushed aside and two beady, black eyes looked at him. "Yes?" the owner of the eyes hissed. His voice was strange, obviously not human. It sounded raspy, and each word had a hiss to it. The man had not been expecting this. He showed his distaste in the fact by moving backwards a little, his eyes glinting with the slightest bit of worry. "Yes?" it hissed again, sounding rather impatient.

The man seemed to snap back to reality. "I am looking for the sorceress, Madame Mastik."

The creature behind the door sniffled and narrowed his eyes. "And who is it that's looking for her?" he snapped.

"Tell her Undermire is here. She'll know the name. I previous contacted her by letter." Undermire did his best to sound as condescending as he could while he spoke. This creature – whatever it was – was beginning to grate on his nerves. He wasn't to be suspected here. He was to be respected. He was in charge after all. Everyone would come to see that in time.

The creature's eyes remained narrowed. "Wait here." The slot snapped shut once more, and the creature's footsteps could be heard as they died away.

Undermire took a deep breath. He unwrapped his handkerchief from his hand as he had forgotten to do so previously. He mopped his forehead before anyone could see that light sweat that had popped out on it. It was another few minutes before the sounds of the creature returning hit Undermire's ears. He quickly placed the handkerchief back where it belonged and straightened up. He hoped his face was a blank slate. Undermire knew that if he kept that up, the fear it instilled would easily give him complete control. "Either that or my wallet," he thought. Instead of the slot opening this time, the door itself swung inwards. The room was dim and not much could be seen at first glance. Still, Undermire was determined to show no hesitation. He sauntered inside with his head held high. Once he was inside, the door was slammed shut behind him. Undermire stopped in his tracks, not sure where he was supposed to go next.

The creature began to walk up to him from behind, making sniffing noises as it got closer. Undermire turned his head to examine it, tired of wondering what it was. The creature was a human-sized rat. Its grey fur looked grimy and clung close to the its body. Luckily, most of the body was covered in a tattered brown suit, so not much of this had to be seen.

"And who do we have here," a voice mused from ahead of Undermire. Unlike the rat's, this voice was smooth, almost seductive. The owner of the voice moved from it's spot in shadow where it had been leaning against the wall, so it could get a closer look at Undermire. In doing this, it revealed itself to be a large, black cat. It's sparkling yellow eyes focused on Undermire, and he walked over to him with a heir of grace. He wore a black suit much like Undermire's – but much more shabby, Undermire mused – that helped him to blend in with the shadows. "Scared?" he purred as he reached Undermire, making sure to press his face as close to the newcomer's as possible. He revelled in making those around him uncomfortable.

"Not in the slightest," Undermire said, his voice calm. "Where is the sorceress?"

"What? You don't like us?" the cat purred, showing off a few of his claws. His heart was set on finding a way to intimidate their new guest – as was his goal for all who came to see the sorceress.

"Boys," a voice erupted from further back in the room. "Leave him alone. He's not like our usual guests. He brings very important business."

Undermire tried to focus his eyes on where the voice had come from. As he searched, a sudden burst of blue light brightened the room for a second. It had looked just like lightning. As it faded away, candles that lined the walls all the way to the back of the room were burning in its place. The flames that adorned them even matched that same blue color. Many of these candles were blobs of wax on their last bit of wick. The dim flickering they gave off was just enough to light the room. It was then quite easy for Undermire to locate the voice. Lounging by the back wall was a woman. She sat in a large, wooden chair with her feet, covered in boots that dissappeared up into the folds of her dark skirts, propped on the old table that sat before her. Taking her in for the first time, she wasn't anything extraordinary. In fact, Undermire was a bit disappointed. He had expected an elegant woman with a great and terrible beauty that would fit a queen – all with the magic to match. Instead, he was faced with this woman. Madame Mastik had pale, pasty skin. Her hair was a flat brown that looked very dull and lanky as it fell past her shoulders and down her back. Her face was a bit pinched looking and her nose too long (at least for Undermire's taste). She was young, so her face was free of the lines of age. Still, the only thing about her that could have been considered fasinating looks-wise was her violet eyes that seemed to glow in the candlelight.

"Welcome, Mr. Undermire. May I ask you what has you so in need of coming to see me? The letter you sent me wasn't very explanatory. Usually, I don't have meetings under those circumstances, but your promises of compensation are... tempting." Her voice had a lower tone than most of the high-pitched ones Undermire had noticed in women, yet he couldn't help comparing it to the Cat's, musing that the Cat's voice was much more alluring than hers.

Undermire smiled, focusing his ice blue eyes straight into the sorceress' purple ones. "I need your help. You see, I've lost something that I want back very badly, something very powerful. I have proved unable to get it back on my own, and after much research, you have proved yourself to be the exact help I need." His teeth glittered as he moved closer to the sorceress. "As I said in my letter, all you have to do is name your price. I will refuse no sum."

It was now Madame Mastik's turn to smile. This was what she had been waiting for. She moved her position so her feet were on the floor, and she was leaning forward on the table. "What's your starting number?"

Undermire continued to grin as he reached inside his coat. He pulled a bag out and threw it into the table. It slid over to Madame Mastik and stopped right before her nose. She grabbed it and opened it up. Inside was a glittering pile of gold – enough gold to keep her living comfortably for years if not her whole life. She waved to her companions to come closer to her. As she held out the bag so they could see it's contents, she said, "well boys, what do you say? Are we in business with Mr. Undermire here?"

The two animals both looked to the bag, to each other, and finally to the sorceress. "Most definately," the cat purred. The rat nodded in agreement.

"Splendid," Undermire replied.

The sorceress motioned towards a chair that sat opposite her. "Shall we discuss the details?"

Undermire wasted no time in sitting down. "The sooner the better."

"So, what exactly do you need us to retrieve for you?" Madame Mastik said as she waved the cat and the rat away to go sit in the corner somewhere.

"It is called the 'Precious Stone,'" Undermire began.

"Quite unoriginal if you ask me...," the sorceress interrupted.

"Well, I didn't," Undermire snapped. "Now, back to the Stone. It is currently with a man who goes by the name of Lawrence Habberdash. Sir Lawrence if you really want to be picky about it... He currently lives in this stupid little town called 'Olaia.'"

"Never heard of it," Madame Mastik remarked.

Undermire was losing his patience. "I know. It's a new town that he founded. I doubt it's even a year old yet. Its near enough to Spokepsie that you can't miss it. Anyway, I need you to bring me back either just Lawrence, so he can reveal the location of the Stone, or," he leaned forward, "if you bring me back both Lawrence and the Stone, I'll pay you even more. A bag more that's even bigger than the one you have now."

Madame Mastik licked her lips. "When do we start?"

A letter from Lawrence

I was feeling a little uninspired, so I turned to the NaNoWriMo forums. There was one that made the suggestion to take a moment to have one (or more) characters write me a pep talk. This letter was born and honestly, it made me feel much better. I thought I'd share it. By the way, it had some fun little hints at what's going on in the book right now!

Dearest Sam,

It has come to my attention that you are having some issues with getting the words out. I thought I would try to be of some assistance. I know that sometimes that you feel what you are writing isn't good, that it won't hold up past your edits. I know that the writer's block keeps creeping closer and closer, but you have to go on. You can do it! Don't worry about if you think the words aren't good enough, they are still words nonetheless. I have faith in you. You got through the first part of my story this way, and I just know you will be able to do it again. I know you. Besides, we're at a pretty tough spot right now, and you're the only one who can help us. Victoria is about to have a spell put on her, Evey is still trapped, there's a fire, and my ankle is in some pain – although my ankle doesn't matter so much, I would rather you dealt with those other problems first. I can limp, it's no problem. But, please, Sam be strong. You are at 29,288 words! Think of what a great accomplishment that is! You are already past halfway there. You have plenty of time to catch up, I mean, you're really not that far behind. What are a couple thousand words to that chunk I just mentioned right there? You're doing fine. Don't sweat it and keep going. Oh, and by the way, if I could just ask one favor... would you mind letting me see the wishing star again? I miss it. It gave me something to look forward to. And, in a time like now, I could really use something to look forward to.

I am always here for you, all you need to do is write.

Sir Lawrence Habberdash

By the way, check out the new merchandise! Just follow the nifty gadget on the left side column of the home screen. I opened a little online store through zazzle.com, so now you can get Happenstance and Zone-E themed t-shirts, stickers, and other goodies! Enjoy!

I'm already halfway there!

The month is halfway through, and I've surpassed 25,000 words (the halfway point) on NaNoWriMo! *Squeal* Who's excited for Counterblow? I know I am, and Lawrence is! I'm so stoked on it. I want to type all about it, but then I don't want to give anything away! (Is there a chance that explaining it would ruin the first book for random people reading this, who haven't read Happenstace? Yes, I'm talking about those imaginary people who read my blog) Okay, that may be out the window... but I can voice my excitement. I mean, I cna't believe I'm doing so well on NaNoWriMo. Last year I completely failed. I guess I'm trying to make up for it. I also think that the Habberdash Trilogy is magically influenced by National Novel Writing Month. Its like Novemeber is the perfect time of year for my brain to wrap around it. But what will I do when the trilogy is over? *Gasp* Well... let's hope that some of my other plot bunnies that are stored away are also fed on NaNoWriMo!

That all being said, this has to be a short blog because inspiration strikes, and NaNoWriMo is calling me!

NaNoWriMo and Zone-E on Amazon!

Straight from the NaNoWriMo fronts, I come to spend some time on my blog. I'm ahead on my word count and feeling the need for a little break. As you can see from the nifty little gadget on the homepage of my blog, you can follow the progress of my writing as November progresses! I am loving every minute of writing the sequel to Happenstance, and new ideas keep popping up. I think that NaNoWriMo must be my lucky charm for the Habberdash Trilogy (I bet you can already guess what I just might be writing next November) I am having oodles of fun playing with both old characters and new ones, as well as plotting out many new twists. At the same time I'm grappling with a big question: Since I already know there will be a third book, should I try to wrap up the story more like in the first book, or should I leave it hanging? Suspense or accomplishment? Which do you prefer? (I'm leaning on suspense. But I'm one who loves clifhangers so...) Feel free to weigh in! (I say this to all the imaginary people who read this blog along with the few who filter across from my facbeook page of course. Still, this is like my big, virtual, writing diary - so I plug on!)

As I am on the subject of Counterblow, I want to give some fun teasers. Firstly, here is my working cover (not likely to be the official cover, but for something I slapped together I'm pretty proud of it. Also, the drawing I did of Lawrence is the best sketch I've ever done of a character by far - especially the face. Usually I suck at those)

Still, amidst all my Counterblow talk, I can't forget my dearest Zone-E. It had been freshly published after all! Guess what? It's now available to buy on amazon! Yay! Now if you prefer to get your books from the place witht he smiley box, you can now get Zone-E there too! (This should make Amazon Prime members especially happy) So follow the linkedy-link and get over there! http://www.amazon.com/Zone-E-Samantha-Taylor/dp/1478141239/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1352272788&sr=8-1&keywords=zone-e+samantha+taylor

A little more on Zone-E

*WARNING: Shameless promoting ensues*

Zone-E, as I have mentioned, is available now! (Still only on CreateSpace, but that still counts!) By the way, did you watch the video in my previous post? No?! Well, do it. If you do, you will find a special code to get $3 off your copy of Zone-E!

Anywhoo, my celebrating the release continues, and I wanted to share more reasons to read the story. Ahem...
1)If you like science fiction or dystopian, this is a book for you! Where it begins, something happened before the year 3000 (that no one really knows much about) that ruined the world for good. Society is screwed up and most of earth is unlivable (Someone told me once, long ago when I first posted bits of Zone-E to inkpop that it was almost scary because they could totally see something like this world happening to us O.o)
2) Don't like science fiction? Then do it for the adventure! They are on a quest for the evil Lord Avarice after all
3) The main character (who also tells the story) is funny - at least I think so....

Not convinced yet? Then read this extended pitch...

Lyza Carroe has seen enough corruption and devastation in her sixteen years of life to drive anyone else mad, but she's not backing down. She's lived all her life in Aquaria, a city inside a Dome that rests at the bottom of the ocean – a clever invention to make more space to live in on the ruined planet of Zone-E, formerly named Earth.

Society is a mess. The gap between rich and poor is unbridgeable and Lyza just so happens to be stuck on the bottom. With her parents stuck in jail, and her aunt and uncle busy enough with their own children, Lyza has to fend for herself. But the streets of Aquaria aren't the place for her to learn about life and grow up.

After a fateful run in with Aquaria's law enforcement, Lyza loses the use of her left eye, and her anonymity. It isn't long before she's caught and brought to the leader of the “free world”, Lord Avarice. He is impressed with her skills and offers her a second chance at freedom. All she has to do is find him a little treasure...

That's easier said than done. Soon, Lyza finds herself surrounded by a group of unlikely travelers who are given the same task. As she's sent to the icy, Northern Arctic Territories or N.A.T. to find this so called treasure, only more questions arise.

Why is Avarice's son on the trip too? What exactly are they looking for anyway? And most importantly, will everyone – if anyone - make it back in one piece?

In this sci-fi, treasure hunt, Lyza must come to terms with growing up. She finds that the problems in life can't be ignored, but faced head on. The only way to make a change is to stand up for what's right.

Sound good? Then get your copy today!

Zone-E is on sale now!

You heard me!

Zone-E, as I said, is not yet available on Amazon. I'll let you know when it is, along with whatever other venues it may become available on (Like Kindle, for example)

Here's the link to the CreateSpace e-store:

Oh and by the way... WOO HOO! I can't believe this day has finally come! WEEEEE!

Now I'm off to work on Counterblow for NaNoWriMo - it is the first day of November after all!

I got a Dragon!

As much as I wish I were talking about the scaly, flying, fire-breathing kind, I'm not. Still, what I have is pretty cool - it is the Dragon voice recognition software. I love it so much! My hands tend to ache after too much time typing or especially hand writing. This weekend I was writing in a notebook, trying to keep it neat for later transcribing when I realized how much of a problem that pain would be later on down the road. So I finally made the decision to get Dragon! (Save the hands!)

It has been so much fun training it, and transcribing with it - I mean, I'll save so much time just doing that! It used to take me twice as long to type while I copied something I'd already handwritten. Anyway, I just thought I'd share my excitement, so... YAY!

By the way, my procrastinating ways aside, I am still going to prove good on my promise to get Zone-E officially published this month. I'm still making my way though my proof (for the last time), but I'm pushing myself forward a little more. At this point every time I look at it I go, "Gosh dangit, I need to get this finished!" So I will. Very Soon. Hoo-rah.

20 Days to Halloween!

I love October. Fall is beginning to actually be fall, there's Halloween decorations everywhere, and it's costume planning time! Do I usually have plans on Halloween? No. I always hated trick or treating and truth be told I don't think I could get away with it anymore. So, what will I be doing? Giving out candy of course! (I've always loved this best - you get to wear the costume, but don't have to waste all the crummy candy that you'll never eat)

Even though nobody will get it, I am going to be Lyza Carroe this year! Why? Because I want to. It will be a fun Zone-E motivator for myself too. How will this motivate me? I'm not so sure... what I am sure of is that Zone-E will be available for sale this month, so ha! (Do I have a date yet, well... no, but if I don't get it done this month...NO I will not even type that. I will be releasing Zone-E this month)

More good news, NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is coming this November. Of course, my brain goes, "Sam, you should be in the throes of marketing Zone-E by then. How can you even think of writing another book?" Because Brain, that's what I do. I can't help it. The fun for me is typing those words (Fun part 2 is seeing them in book form).

So... lots of fun coming up! I'm gunna go work on Zone-E some more now, but before I do, here's a picture of me in the beginnings of my Lyza costume :P

(By the way, that eye-patch is not comfortable. I do not envy Lyza at all, poor thing. Imagine losing an eye and then having to wear that.)

And I thought the editing was over...

So this is the final edit, I know that for sure. I have my proof and I'm trying to push myself to get it done. I plan to have this book ready for release in October (I'll make the date official soon!) I have done more editing on the cover than I ever imagined, but I want to make it work so bad! It was made for me a couple years ago and I can't get over how awesome it is (and everyone I've showed it to is like "Woah, what's that?")

Besides editing (since I'm so sick of reading my own book that its becoming increasingly harder to do so) I've been working on a fun short story that is sort of a prequel to Zone-E. I think I may do a few of these, all of which I will be sharing on this blog. (That's where you say, "Hooray!" Haha, or not...)

That brings me to a final question I have to ask myself, Why are you writing this instead of editing? Because my brain hurts. That's why.

AHHHHHHHHHH!

The title of course refers to my reaction of seeing the box that held my first copy of Zone-E in it. Keep in mind that this is a proof copy, it's not for sale just yet. (I want to make everything is all perfect inside :D) Still, its an exciting occasion. It's been a little over 2 years since I first started writing Zone-E and to finally have it done and printed in book form is enough to make me scream with joy, bounce up and down, and do happy dances on-and-off for the rest of the day!

I was almost nervous opening that box. Many questions went through my head. "Will it look good?" "How thick will it actually be?" were just a couple... To answer those questions, "Yes!" and "Pretty darn thick! 496 pages is a lot!"

Buahaha! I am so happy. Now its time to look everything over, make sure it all is good, and then Zone-E can be available for others to enjoy!

Editing? Check!

I guess having to account to my main character in doodle form really worked... I am officially done with my editing! About time, says you. I agree! says me. The only hurdle left is to submit everything to CreateSpace so I can get my Proof copy sent! What's a proof copy, you ask? Its the copy of the book they send me so I can make sure everything looks good before I approve it for sale. Unlike with Happenstance, I will not take weeks to approve it. I think my editing was pretty thorough this time around so I'll only be looking to make sure all the formatting stuff is good (Do I like the font size? are my margins big enough? Did I bold that chapter name?) Yeah, fun stuff, I know.

Oh, and by the way.... WHOOPEEEEEEEEE! I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M FINALLY DONE! Yes, imagine me screaming that cause I am!

A Pep Talk From Lyza

I really need to nip this procrastination thing in the bud, thus why this is going to be a very short post. (Tonight is stay up and edit until you can't keep your eyes open anymore night). In my inspiration to get this darn book in print, I drew a cartoon of Lyza that will greet me each time I try to leave the room (it's taped to the door) and each time I turn on my computer (its the picture on my desktop).

It's my lame attempt to make it look like she's pointing at me, but it does the job. I also wrote this poem from her perspective:

Hey you
playing that stupid computer game
Hey you
watching that TV thing
Hey you
wandering around outside
Hey you
from me you cannot hide
Hey you
get your lazy butt doing some editing
Hey you
I'm sick of you being the only one who knows of me

THE END

I love my characters

I don't know if they're incredibly or amazing or ground-breaking or anything, but I love my characters because they're like friends that I get to spend time with each time I write about them. I try to put as much into their back stories and who they are as I do the plot itself - even if the back stories are something only my eyes will ever see. I have as much fun creating villains as heroes, and I'm constantly wondering what happened before my story began. It becomes quite overwhelming sometimes actually... I want to write it all but I can't do it all at once (and I only have so much attention span....)!

I fall asleep thinking about my characters and their many adventures, constantly wondering how I could craft them into an interesting storyline to be written at a later date. I wish I could draw them, but that usually escapes me (unless it's in the form of cartoons of course... I have examples of that in previous posts). I can't help but talk about my characters and when things remind me of them I laugh, wishing the whole world was in on what I consider an inside joke between my characters and myself. (Every time I see the first star, for example, I think of my dearest Lawrence Habberdash. If only he were real, we would have so much fun watching for it!)

I think its always a character that sparks a new idea for me too. It was a picture of Lawrence that inspired Happenstance, the idea of a character like Luka Nills (I will later explain) who brought out Zone-E, and of course I have many other references from my head that I don't even want to mention right now for fear that I'll get so excited about them that I'll want to start writing their stories now (Let's finish Zone-E and the sequel to Happenstance first, shall we?)

Okay, so now I'll tell you about Luka, just a little bit. She's the youngest person to have ever become a head guide in the N.A.T. (She's 23), and she's very fun. She's happy, optimistic, and a darn good leader too! I think the first time I ever thought about her it was a scene where she comes in from the snow, all bundled up in snow-clothes to the point that you can't tell if she's a boy or girl. She surprises whoever she's meeting by turning out to be a girl in fact - its not a job that many girls get into. This later translated into a scene in the book, I couldn't resist. (I feel no shame in giving this away, its no secret). I don't know why I love her so much, or why I was so attached to her in the first place, it just happened. I have to say she "guided" me to a pretty great story though.. teehee.

And then I love Lyza too. She's my spunky, annoying, lovable little protagonist. I couldn't have done this story without her (it is told from her P.O.V. after all). She filters in my sense of humor quite a bit and gives the story a fun voice. Of course, she can also get a bit serious (I do consider this a sort of coming of age story of her after all, among its other ideas...) Although, I have to give credit for Lyza's purple hair to my little sister. It was her love for hair color that inspired that one :P ....I don't think I could ever go purple

Okay, so now that I've got myself talking about Zone-E characters, I can't help but mention Ollie. Believe it or not, he started out as a girl, but I scratched that pretty quick. He had to be perceived as an heir to his father, a threat, a chance to be just like him - but then its obvious he's not. Oliver channels my shy side, but shows strength and growth too.

So I guess that must make you wonder, Hey you! Who's Oliver's father and why is he so important? Well, Ollie's father is the villain of course! Lord Avarice is mean, corrupt, and had a love for collecting treasures. He's actually one of those characters that I want to write a spin off about (What made him so mean? Trust me, I've got ideas)

You know, all this talk of my characters makes me want to write about them.... (Haha, ulterior motive achieved) I'm off to edit more of Zone-E so I can share all of my fictional friends!

The World of Zone-E

My new book, Zone-E centers around a world that is Earth, but not Earth. After other planets with other intelligent beings were discovered and given names such as Zone-A, Zone-B, etc, Earth was renamed Zone-E.

This all came about after a global change that isn't talked about much in the book itself. It is almost like a second Dark Ages. Anything before the year 3000 isn't talked about much, there isn't any real record of it. And though the book also doesn't delve into this fact, the schools don't teach it.

Actually there are a lot of background things that I've gotten into that don't ever get mentioned in the book. Let's just say I plan for some spin offs in the not so near future... But I do want to explain a little more about this world that is Zone-E.

I see it as a rebuild of whatever disaster that happened before 3000. The Avarices are already in power when this new year comes around. It is the father of Lord Avarice (the villain in Zone-E) who is really in charge at this point. But what point are we at? The world is in chaos. Much of it is iced over except for the southern hemisphere which is seeing lots of rain and definitely isn't as warm as it used to be. The United States are not only cut off from the rest of the world itself (thus why we don't hear anything about Europe, Asia, etc) but is completely broken - as Lyza Carroe puts it, "Say goodbye to democracy, folks." The new USA is simply called the States and has actually changed its region a bit. Sure, the leader of what the USA was is in charge, but as Lyza briefs us, there has been a hostile takeover of the livable areas, which so happen to be more of South America than anything (though I imagine states like Texas, New Mexico, and so on are still a part of the mix for sure). The northern parts of the USA and probably bits of Canada (Note- as the book stands, Canada has kind of disappeared. I plan to give explanations of this in later books) are now the N.A.T. or Northern Arctic Territories. These are iced over completely and home to only a few small villages where the main enterprise is being a Guide, someone who goes out into the uninhabited NAT to retrieve leftover supplies that may be around.

The only part of the States that people live in is called Aquaria. This was a ploy by Avarice to keep people in Zone-E and possibly attract tourists from other planets. He located this completely frivolous and out-of-the way project at the bottom of the ocean off the what-was-once-California coast. The plan was to have a bunch of Domes be a part of Aquaria, but the project ran out of money after the first Dome was completed. Now what Aquaria is is a strange mix of upper and lower class (with an extreme difference between them as there is no middle class) How could this be? Well, those with money were able to strive in the Dome while those who went there seeking fortune (kind of like immigrants who came to America seeking better opportunity) found a hard life.

And that's the basics. I'll later delve into some other info about the world, but I thought it would be cool to brief you on what its all like. I've spent so much time on a world that doesn't fully make it into the story's plot that I realize it would be fun to share it. (Yes I was inspired by J.K. Rowling extra info she puts out on Pottermore... :P)

The woes of editing...

Editing isn't fun, and it doesn't help when you're a big procrastinator (like me). More often than not I find myself doing something and stopping to think, Why am I not editing right now? Still, to give myself a little credit, I have read through my new book, Zone-E about 3 times already (and I still haven't caught everything! Can you believe that?) I may just have to accept the few grammatical errors and get on with it. It's not like I can't go back and work on it again later, right? Maybe, I say. Maybe not, says the perfectionist in me. Sigh... Anyway, a few good things come from getting distracted. Like this!

Haha... silly Lyza. Of course, it would make a lot more sense if you had read the book. Right now it's just a fun inside joke... for myself... That's it! I'm going back to editing! (Enjoy my cartoon :P)

Happenstance is available for Kindle at this time, but it is not yet available to Nook. Sorry Nook users :(

I finally have some form of site!

Well I finally did it. It's not technically a website, but it works for now! This will be the place to go for all information on my books. Wanna find out about book signings? Want to know when my next book is coming out? You're in the right place!

To start I want to talk about my book that's already out there, Happenstance. This book came out of nowhere and very often I think of it like a lovechild - unexpected, but still something I adore very much. It tells the story of Lawrence Habberdash. He lives in Spokepsie. It was once a small town but grew into a metropolis when the Oot Fruit industry became popular. The Oot Fruits were discovered by Lawrence's great-great-great grandfather and had stayed in the family business until Lawrence's father accidentally signed it away to a business group called the Big Wigs, headed by one Percival C. Undermire.

Lawrence started out as a simple doodle. I kept it around because I thought it was cute. In November of 2010, I found out about the fascinating program called National Novel Writing Month. (www.nanowrimo.org) I was currently working on Zone-E (We'll talk about this later) but wanted to start my 50,000 word goal with something fresh. That was when I looked over at that doodle and thought, "I'll write it about Lawrence!" One month later I had a novel. I published it with an amazing self-publishing company called CreateSpace (www.createspace.com) and have enjoyed selling some copies and sharing my words with family and friends. It's not that I don't care about making money selling books, but the most important thing to me is that the words get read, even if just by a few people. I have to say, just holding that book in my hands felt pretty awesome too.

Another awesome thing, was realizing that Happenstance had potential for a sequel. Once I get Zone-E in print, that will be my next job! (Once I start working on marketing my books better of course ;D) I already have the first few chapters done and some new characters mapped out. I'm quite excited.

Now I'm going to take the chance to explain my next book, a huge change from Happenstance. If Happenstance is my love-child, then Zone-E is the baby that I always planned on and wanted (Not that I didn't want Happenstance). The idea for Zone-E came years before Happenstance. It was just an idea - a group of characters looking for a treasure in an icy tundra in a dystopian world. I never had enough of a plot to really write it though, so I left it on the back-burner. Then, about a year before Happenstance, I was on a site, doing a writing contest just for fun. The prompt was to write a short story where characters used their own kind of slang, set anywhere we wanted. I found that old idea, and suddenly my main character, Lyza, came to life. When I finished writing the short story, I realized it had such potential. The story became the Prologue and the first chapter. They both have changed a bit by now but the idea remains.

I had come to a stand still by the time Happenstance came around. I was halfway through and had no idea where it was going. A year later, it still wasn't coming about. Another NaNoWriMo had come and gone (This time without a book coming from it) and I was feeling rather sad. Then in the Spring I moved down with my grandparents to get some new scenery and experiences in. Slowly, some words came. Then I took an amazing class, and extension class at a local community college. It was taught by Bobbie Christensen. It was all about a book she had written called Writing, Publishing and Marketing Your 1st Book (or 7th) - If you're a writer, I highly suggest reading it! www.booksamerica.com. It gave me a whole new perspective. I did as she suggested, mapping out the book scene by scene. Once I knew the end, things were suddenly easier. Before I knew it, Zone-E was done. It was a huge relief. Sure, I haven't followed the editing portion of her method exactly (since I'm still editing it and all) but its still so much farther than it would have been! I am proud to say that I'll be published for the second time this Fall. Also, I am planning on entering this one in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest that happens in January. Its a great way to get publicity and I look forward to having Zone-E ready for it! Now that that's all said and done, I sign off on my first post here!
